Sweetgrass Baskets Sweetgrass is a sweet smelling grass that grows in the marsh. It is dried and used to create these baskets. Sweetgrass is a fiber that is flexible. The basket is sewn by using dried Palmetto Palm, also a fiber, by tearing it in long string like strips to secure the grass as you sew in a circle. These two main ingredients form a strong sturdy vessel or basket that lasts a long time. Pine needles and Bullrush are added for beauty and design.
The craft of this type of basket making was brought from Africa. The Sierra Leone slaves, who were brought to America on ships, to the gulf region of the Carolinas, made these wonderful baskets. They were used to store food, and other things. Some were used to separate the chaff from the rice that they grew in the rice fields of South Carolina.
